Black
Copal is a dark aromatic resin from Bursera bipinnata, known for its bright resinous smoke, pine-like freshness,
citrusy lift, and soft earthy depth. Heated gently on charcoal or a resin
warmer, it creates a clean, ceremonial atmosphere with a deeper, smokier
character than pale copal varieties.
Origin: This black copal comes from Bursera bipinnata, a copal-producing
tree native from Mexico to Central America. Copal has been burned in
Mesoamerican ritual traditions for centuries, valued for its fragrant smoke
and its role in ceremonial cleansing, offerings, and sacred spaces.
The Resin: Natural black copal resin
pieces from Bursera bipinnata. Associated with aromatic terpenes such as α-pinene,
β-phellandrene, limonene, and carene, this resin releases a bright,
piney-citrus smoke with earthy resinous depth when warmed on charcoal or an
electric resin burner, without added fragrance or synthetic perfume.
OLFA: We select natural aromatic
materials for their depth, character, and ability to transform the atmosphere
of a space. This black copal resin reflects our approach to ritual scent:
raw, elemental, and rooted in traditional incense materials, presented with a
modern and refined sensibility.
